On September 23, 2025, PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) announced a partnership with the Cakrawala Nusantara Energy Cooperative (ECN) to process corn cobs and straw into biomass for cofiring at the Tanjung Awar-Awar coal power plant in Tuban, East Java. Using a 2-ton-per-hour Hammer Mill provided by PLN NP, the cooperative produces around 8 tons of biomass daily. The initiative reduces carbon emissions by replacing a portion of coal with agricultural waste, while also creating additional income streams for local farmers who previously burned residues on their land.
PLN NP President Director Ruly Firmansyah emphasized that the program aligns with Indonesia’s Regulation No. 12/2023 on biomass cofiring and supports the national renewable energy mix targets. Tuban, a key corn-producing region with over 760,000 tons of annual output, generates millions of tons of agricultural waste that can now be transformed into green energy. Beyond environmental benefits, the cooperative-based model empowers rural communities, fosters waste management, and strengthens energy security, positioning the initiative as a replicable model for sustainable energy transition across Indonesia.
